I fixed my wipers and all I got was this awful picture to show for it.

I always realize after everything is put back together, twice, that I never took any photos… Enter in the journey of my wiper woes. It all began a few years ago when my wipers decided they didn’t want to do typical wiper things and stay confined to the windshield. They wanted to see what was outside their land and venture beyond the A pillar and seemed increasingly more afraid of the bottom of the windshield. It wasn’t all bad, the wipers going over the A pillar would occasionally knock all the snow off and give me more visibility and… no, never mind, that was the only good thing. Multiple times I had the wipers go past the A-pillar and flip over on to the windshield which was not fun at all.

What to do? The internet says it was the bushings within the linkage that were shot. Surprise, surprise, Subaru doesn’t sell just the bushings but there are some floating around for other makes that “could” work. I got some, they didn’t. Shit. Now I had no wipers on my car at all and a giant hole where the cowl should be. I decided to buy the entire linkage from Subaru and not have to deal with it again. I called a dealership in Salt Lake to make sure they had the part and reserve it for pick-up the following day since it was closing in 10 minutes.

The next morning it was supposed to rain, I still had no wipers. Decided, “Screw it” and drove to SLC sans wipers and picked up the part with no issues. Or so I thought. I put the motor on to the linkage in the parking lot of the dealer and go to put it in the car and… shit, these holes don’t line up. Oh what’s that parts man? They switched linkage design mid-way through the model year and I have the old one? No big deal. Oh, you don’t have the one I need in stock? Of course not. One of the other dealers across town has it though! So I go there.

This one was finally the right part and I go to install everything easy peasy, turn on the wipers and!… they are going down. But they are already down. Well that doesn’t work and I have places to be! So I drove around without working wipers for a few days.

I figured I knew what was wrong but just needed to get the time to actually fix it with the expectation that everything wouldn’t work. I got the chance on Monday and sure enough, the damn wiper linkage got misaligned. I’m not sure how, I could have swore I had it lined up the first time. The whole swap was really easy and probably only took 20 minutes tops.

All of this happened because I needed new wipers and have always wanted the PIAA Super Silicone but didn’t want to immediately screw them up from my janky wipers. I used them on the way to work this morning and my quick review is: They are fucking incredible. My past Rain-x wipers were pretty shot and left tons of streaks and seemed to spread the water around instead of actually getting it off the windshield.

And that’s it. Possibly the most ever written on changing wipers.
